Words by Nanci J. Mortimer and Pictures by Della Wells
A young girl and her parents travel from Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood to see the Grant Park Orchestra. “It’s gonna be ee—lec—tric!” Daddy says. The family rides the ‘L’ train—what mama calls “everybody’s taxi,” on the Red Line to downtown Millennium Park. The girl is captivated by a man on the ‘L’ platform playing the Blues, and also by the violin soloist on stage playing a concerto. On the train ride home, she falls asleep on her mama’s lap and dreams of adding her own music to the “City of the Big Shoulders.”
